Salta -> San Antonio de los Cobres, Tolar Grande

Distance traveled: 400 km in 8 hours

Included: Dinner, Lodging in Alojamiento Afapuna

We will drive up the Andes Cordillera via the beautiful Quebrada del Toro, arriving at the "pueblo" of Santa Rosa de Tastil, at 3,100 meters of altitude. There we find pre-Inca ruins, where we can walk around the extinct settlement. Continuing our ascent of the Altiplano, we will get as high as 4,080 meters. We will descend to 3,700 meters, arriving at the Altiplanic town of San Antonio de los Cobres, where we stop for lunch. We will visit the La Polvorilla rail bridge (Tren a las Nubes, 4,600 meters). We proceed to Tolar Grande (3,520 meters) by way of the Pocitos Salar and the surprising Labyrinth Desert.

Day 2:

Tolar Grande

Distance traveled: 200 km in 8 hours

Included: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner, Lodging in Alojamiento Afapuna

Early morning we will return to the Labyrinth Desert to photograph the sensuous shapes and colors of its rocks. We then proceed to the Tolar Grande Salar to photograph the water sources ("ojos de agua" in Spanish), among other things. We drive to the Arizaro Salar, the third largest in the world, to photograph the Altiplanic landscape and details of the salt crystals and other minerals (macro). Around Tolar Grande there is a paleo-salar with incredible rock formations, as well as a salt cave, which presents a photographic challenge (flash, light painting). At night we will return to the Arizaro Salar, to do long exposures (tripod), under one of the starriest skies in the world.

Day 3:

Tolar Grande -> Antofagasta de la Sierra

Distance traveled: 300 km in 8 hours

Included: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner, Lodging in Hosteria Antofagasta de la Sierra

We start before sunrise, crossing the Arizaro Salar, heading to the "pueblo" of Antofalla. Inserted in the southern part of the Salar, we will photograph the spectacular Arita Cone, almost perfect, extremely photogenic. We leave the Salar, climbing and skirting a volcano, toward Antofalla, on its namesake Salar. Besides photographing the Salar and Cone from the distance, we will be able to see wild camelids (vicuñas, guanacos), foxes, condors, hares, in the Altiplanic landscape (telephoto). We arrive at Antofalla, stopping for lunch. We then explore the Antofalla Salar, photographing young volcanoes, water sources ("eyes") of different colors, and the volcanoes that surround it. We proceed to the town of Antofagasta de la Sierra (3,323 meters of altitude), climbing away from the Salar to an Altiplanic landscape, fine camelid habitat, getting to the altitude of 4,500 meters. Finally, we enter the region of Antofagasta, with spectacular igneous rocks: many volcanoes, basaltic flows, ignimbrite walls. We will photograph the sunset on the lagoon, which hosts geese, ducks, gulls, flamingoes, amongst others.

Day 4:

Antofagasta de la Sierra -> El Peñón

Distance traveled: 150 km in 8 hours

Included: Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner, Lodging in Hosteria El Peñón

Before sunrise we set out for the "pueblo" of El Peñón (3,500 meters of altitude), passing through geologically recent basaltic lava flows. We enter the El Peñón area and the scenery changes, with the effects of volcanic activity visible everywhere: a young basaltic volcano in the center, the Carachi Pampa lagoon besides it, and in the background a huge whitish area, which is the world's largest pumice rock field. We will explore the field, walking among the huge remnants of wind-eroded pumice rock, which generate giant dunes. We stop for lunch at El Peñón. In the afternoon we drive up to the Brava Lagoon, passing by some lagoons which host birds and camelids (telephoto).

Day 5:

El Peñón -> Cafayate

Distance traveled: 300 km in 6 hours

Included: Breakfast,Lunch, Lodging in Hotel Killa Cafayate

We leave El Peñón ascending the Altiplano, passing through the Laguna Blanca natural reserve, where camelids (llamas, vicuñas and guanacos), foxes, condors and other birds can be seen (telephoto). We then descend the Altiplano, arriving at the village of Hualfin where we have lunch. We arrive in the town of Cafayate (1,660 meters of altitude), land of fine wines and splendorous nature, in the Calchaquí valley. We will visit some wineries ("bodegas") (flash). The sunset will be photographed from above town, where we will enjoy a great view of the valley, with the red sunlight bathing the other side (tripod).

Day 6:

Cafayate -> Cachi, Salta

Distance traveled: 400 km in 8 hours

Included: Breakfast

From Cafayate we proceed to Salta via Cachi, at 2,200 meters of altitude, ascending the Calchaquí valley through the famous "Ruta 40". In this stretch we will pass many distinct rock formations, offering numerous photographic opportunities; the Quebrada de Flechas is an example. In Cachi we will have lunch and can visit the Archaeological Museum. We continue our trip passing through the Tin Tin Stretch, in the Los Cardones National Park. We will be able to photograph all aspects of these noble cacti (Trichocereus genus) (macro). We then climb until the Piedra del Molino, at 3,300 meters of altitude. At this point we will view all the Cuesta del Obispo, our way down the Cordilhera.
