After our transfer from the airport to the hotel, we hold a briefing session, where we will discuss the most important aspects of our trip. During the remaining part of the day we will do a city tour: we will visit the San Bernardo hill, the monument to Güemes, and walk around the city center (Plaza 9 de Julio). Next morning, after breakfast, our adventure trip begins.

Day 1:

Salta -> Purmamarca

Distance traveled: 220 km in 4 hours

From Salta we drive to Jujuy via the more scenic route, via La Caldera. From Jujuy we follow to Purmamarca, at 2,192 meters of altitude. Purmamarca is a typical Andean "pueblo": narrow streets, old houses, handicrafts everywhere, in the midst of fabulous mountains. Hiking the surrounding area we can appreciate its fantastic rock formations, such as the "Cerro de los Siete Colores".

Day 2:

Purmamarca

Distance traveled: 50 km in 6 hours

In the morning, when the light is at a better angle, we will hike the town's surrounding hills, known as the "Paseo los Colorados". The colors of the rocks, reflecting their mineralogy, are hard to believe. In the afternoon, we suggest browsing the wide variety of handicrafts in town. A tour on horseback can be arranged.

Day 3:

Purmamarca -> Tilcara, Humahuaca

Distance traveled: 200 km in 7 hours

We will ascend the Quebrada de Humahuaca, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. We cross the Tropic of Capricorn near Huacalera. In Tilcara (2,461 meters of altitude) we will visit pre-Inca ruins: the "Pucará de Tilcara". We spend the night in the picturesque town of Humahuaca, at 2,936 meters.

Day 4:

Humahuaca -> Laguna de los Pozuelos, Humahuaca

Distance traveled: 240 km in 8 hours

From Humahuaca we will climb to the Altiplano to visit the Laguna de los Pozuelos Natural Monument (3,600 meters of altitude). The Lagoon hosts a multitude of fauna: wild camelids (vicuñas and guanacos), foxes, birds (flamingos, Andean gulls, Andean geese, ducks, condors). In the afternoon we return to Humahuaca.

Day 5:

Humahuaca -> Iruya

Distance traveled: 200 km in 5 hours

We drive to the "pueblo" of Iruya, at 2,780 meters of altitude. The road we take winds down a valley, and, in the end, lies Iruya, as if it were lost in the Cordillera.

Day 6:

Iruya

Distance traveled: 50 km in 8 hours

The morning is free, and we recommend walking around the "pueblo", with its steep streets paved with stone. In the afternoon we will hike to San Isidro, in Iruya's surroundings.

Day 7:

Iruya -> Laguna de Guayatayoc, Salinas Grandes, Susques

Distance traveled: 300 km in 8 hours

We climb the Iruya valley via the sinuous road, and head South on the Altiplano. We will arrive at the Laguna de Guayatayoc (3,600 meters of altitude), a rich habitat for Altiplanic fauna: camelids (vicuñas, llamas), foxes, flamingoes, Andean gulls, Andean geese, amongst others. We then proceed to the Salinas Grandes salt flat (3,450 meters), where we will be able to appreciate the immensity of salt in the Altiplano. We finish the day in the Altiplanic "pueblo" of Susques (3,890 meters).

Day 8:

Susques -> San Antonio de los Cobres

Distance traveled: 150 km in 5 hours

We will drive to the Altiplanic town of San Antonio de los Cobres, at 3,700 meters of altitude. On the way we will see a field of rocks known as "volcanic bombs" (they do not explode!), fauna, typical Andean "pueblos", mountains and fabulous rock formations, will pass besides the Tuzgle volcano and under the La Polvorilla rail bridge ("Tren a las Nubes", 4,200 meters).

Day 9:

San Antonio de los Cobres -> Cachi

Distance traveled: 200 km in 6 hours

From San Antonio de los Cobres, we will climb via a sinuous road to the Abra El Acay, at 4,890 meters of altitude. We will see vicuñas, foxes, rabbits, condors, amongst others. The Abra el Acay separates the Altiplano from the Calchaquí valley. From there we can appreciate the immensity of the Altiplano, its crystal-clear atmosphere, the deep blue sky... We will descend the Cordillera by the Calchaquí valley to the town of Cachi, at 2,200 meters.

Cachi

Distance traveled: 270 km in 8 hours

The morning is free. We recommend walking around town and visiting the Pío Pablo Díaz Archaeological Museum. After lunch, we will explore Cachi's surroundings: the Los Cardones National Park, the Tin Tin Stretch, the Piedra del Molino and Enchanted valley, passing by the Calchaquí "pueblo" of Seclantas.

Day 11:

Cachi -> Cafayate

Distance traveled: 180 km in 5 hours

From Cachi we drive down the Calchaquí valley to Cafayate, at 1,660 meters of altitude. We will enjoy the incredible rock formations, such as the Quebrada de Flechas. We will visit the "pueblos" of Seclantas, Molinos and Angastaco.

In Cafayate one can: visit "bodegas"; search for handicrafts in wool, silver, leather, ceramic; see the town and surroundings on bicycle or horseback; enjoy the northern Argentine cuisine, such as empanadas, humitas, tamales, locro, carbonada, quinoa, llama meat, goat cheese.

Cafayate -> Quebrada de las Conchas, Salta

We travel to Salta via the road that will take us along the "Quebrada de las Conchas", a valley of splendorous geology and scenery. We will visit "La Punilla", "Los Castillos" (The Castles), "La Yesera", the Amphitheater, the Devil's Throat, Three Crosses, amongst others. Toward the end of our trip, we enter the fertile Lerma valley, where lies the provincial capital of Salta.
